# Assistant

> A conversation grounded in one guidebook's procedures and documents, with cited answers.

The guidebook assistant is in private preview. Organizations with it turned on see an **Ask** button in the header of every guidebook page. It opens the **Ask this guidebook** sheet: a conversation grounded in that guidebook's procedures and documents, and nothing else. Type a question in the composer, or pick one of the starter questions. The starters are written for each guidebook from its published procedures and converted documents ("Where does wire 14 go and how long is it?") and are rewritten whenever a procedure is published or a document is converted.

[Contact us](https://holos.io/contact) to get it turned on for your organization.

## What it can answer

The assistant reads before it answers, and it answers only from what the guidebook holds:

* **Procedures**: which ones exist, what their steps, callouts, and verifications say, and which steps carry a caution or warning. It checks procedures first, because a procedure is the reviewed answer for the equipment, and goes to a document only when no procedure covers the question. Pinned procedures are preferred when a question could fit several.
* **Reference documents**: what a drawing, BOM, or manual says, once the PDF has been converted. Wiring and parts questions (where a wire goes, what a terminal connects to, a part number) are answered from the document's own tables, row by row.
* **History**: who created, edited, or published a procedure and when, from the procedure's activity log, with people shown by name and photo.

If the guidebook's content does not answer the question, the assistant says so rather than guessing. A document whose text is not available yet (still converting, or the conversion failed) is reported as such; right-click it in the References card to convert it.

## Reading an answer

* Steps quoted from a procedure render as the procedure page's own step rows, with the same numbering style, callout icons, and colors. A step's part chip opens the [3D guide](/dashboard/procedures.md#3d-guide) on that part.
* Procedures are linked by short ID and title. A link to a particular step opens the procedure page on that step, in a new tab, so the conversation stays put.
* Documents appear as chips that open the source viewer. Every fact taken from a document carries a citation mark; click it to see the page with the passage outlined.
* A list of values flattened into a step's description (a torque list, settings, parts with quantities) is shown as a table after the step card.
* The reads behind an answer fold under one line ("Read 1 procedure, ran a search and opened 1 document"). Expand it to see each read and what it found.

The conversation survives closing and reopening the sheet. A page refresh starts over.

To ask by voice instead of typing, see [Voice mode](/dashboard/guidebooks/voice.md).
